Our Waking Dream

As we approach the launch of the book, I am working on a whole new interactive experience that will allow you the reader create your own Dreamer and interact with other Dreamers.  This is an old school gaming format known as “Free Form Role-play”.

In addition to working on Book II, I am building a website for Dreamers to enter into chat rooms that are set in various places in the books, where everyone can contribute to expanding their own Dreamer story and react to the events unfolding in the books.  Free Form Role-play has very little rules, and is meant to focus more on story telling and not on combat and rules.  Each of you will have the opportunity to create your Dreamer, gain experience by doing various activities on the website, and use Quanta and Weirdness to shape your part in the Waking Dream.

I will be rolling out various features as they are completed.  I am going to take an iterative approach to releasing functionality, and I will be taking feedback from you all on what features you would like me to add.

There will be no charge for using this website, and you don’t even need to buy the books, but it is highly suggested since you will want to follow the story.

I will be having a limited beta-test in June, and I will create a sign-up sheet for those interested in helping me test the site out.  I will also be recruiting DreamMasters to moderate the chat rooms, and settle any disputes.  DreamMasters will have the final say over any ambiguities that may arise.  You may only have one Dreamer account at a time and when your Dreamer dies, you will be able to create a new one to replace the old one.

To get yourself ideas on the world and the system, check out the Way of the Weird website for more information.

I will keep you updated on the progress.

The Unkind Update

Greetings Dreamers!

I am nearly half way finished with the next book, and I wanted to give you all an opportunity to give me feedback on what you’d like to see more of in the next book!  Is there a character you want to know more about?  Is there a different location you want me to highlight?  More action?  More romance? More horror?

Waking Dream: The Unkindness will expose who is behind the plot to start the Transformation.  Several new characters will be introduced, and the Greater and Celestial Immortals will be revealed.  Will the Dreamers survive?  What will the world look like after the Transformation has completed?

Please feel free to comment on this post, via Facebook or directly below this post in the comments section.

Thank you again for all your support!

What is the Waking Dream?

Its All a Waking DreamI’ve been asked many times “What exactly are you trying to do with the Waking Dream Universe?”

I have actually been working on the Waking Dream Universe for about 15 years. It is the product of the many years I’ve spent studying religion, philosophy, cosmology and Quantum Mechanics. I wanted to write a series of novels that blurred all the lines between what is real and what is not, because when you really get down to it — can you actually describe reality? How do you know that what you are seeing is real? And, what if we had an innate ability to change it?

The Waking Dream is the universe — a place where we are free to create whatever we want and make our lives whatever we want. There are three types of beings in my universe — Dreamers, Sleepers and Immortals.

Dreamers are those of us who have the ability to use a primordial force known as the Weird — which is just my distillation of all the nebulous concepts that from throughout history such as the Tao, the Holy Spirit, the Akashic Record, the Force. It is the clay from which we mold the world. Dreamers have an ability called Weirdness, which allows them to affect the world around them in a very similar way to magick. But, a Dreamer cannot begin to use this ability until they realize that they are a Dreamer. They come into the world through a form of reincarnation. This is where the Sleepers come in.

Sleepers are merely those that have no ability to change the world around them. They breed and spread like the rest of the animals in the world, and their purpose is to fulfill the will of the Dreamers. And, they serve as reincarnation vessels for the Dreamers. When a Dreamer dies, they return to my form of the afterlife known as the Spaces Between. From there, they choose a Sleeper they wish to inhabit, and forget all of their previous lives [except at a subconscious level] and begin life all over again, trying to Awaken their Weirdness. Think of it as assuming a character in a game, yet you don’t know you are playing a game. And once you Awaken, you realize that there is something much more profound behind it all — Immortality.

All Dreamers are innately Immortal in spirit. A Dreamer can become Immortal and once that happens, they no longer forget who they are when they die and return. The bodies of the Sleepers are not Immortal, only the Dreamer soul that inhabits them. But, when they die, they can return and remember all of their experiences from past lives, and command greater control over the Weird.

The Waking Dream is the entire universe. Earth is special because it was the first planet in the universe to become inhabited by Dreamers. But there are countless other worlds where Dreamers and Immortals exist. However, Immortals are bound to their home planet — the place where they first became Immortal. And once the Earth is gone, they will be free to explore other worlds, but they’ll begin the process of becoming Immortal all over again.

I hope this gives you enough information to decide if the Waking Dream series intrigues you enough to follow me on this journey — perhaps awaken and see the dream for yourself.

Life is its own answer

With all the things happening in the world, its hard not to be introspective.  So much over philosophical beliefs has caused this eternal strife.  Religious morals, personal biases, social pressures.

“There is no secret. Anyone with eyes can see the way to live, by watching life, observing nature and cooperating with it. Making common cause with the process of existence. By living life for itself. Don’t you see? Deriving pleasure from the gift of pure being. Life is it’s own answer. Accept it and enjoy it day by day. Live as well as possible. Expect no more.

Destroy nothing. Humble nothing.Look for fault in nothing.Leave unsullied and untouched all that is beautiful.Hold that which lives in all reverence. For life is given by the Sovereign of our universe, given to be savored, to be luxuriated in, to be respected. But that is no secret. You’re intelligent. You know as well as I what has to be done.”

The Waking Dream – Why I Write

I began writing the Waking Dream stories, as well as creating characters, illustrations and a role-playing framework about 15 years ago. I’ve been a gamer and role-player since I was 8 — I played the original Dungeons and Dragons, and I was hooked [After 6 hours of trying to understand the rules, then creating a character with one hit point that died in the first battle *never start with a wizard*]

Over the years, I have played just about every major role-playing game, both on and offline since then. I am an avid Xbox gamer, and I when I am not writing, I am gaming [and of course spending time with my family who also game.] What hooked me to role-playing was free-form role-play on Internet Relay Chat [IRC], and the first place I played was BlkDragon*Inn on EFNet. There was no turning back from there.

What has always disappointed me, is the fact that many games, books and role-playing games are variations on the same theme. Its not to suggest that other writers are not extraordinarily talented. They have taken the themes and done wonders. But I wanted something unique and different from the rest. I wanted to truly create a unique universe, not just a single world varying on a multitude of worlds already created. I want to create a new reality.

I truly enjoy playing console and PC games, but they are always limited in the story, for many obvious reasons. The developers can only allow so much in the storyline, though some, like Skyrim and all the Elder Scrolls games, are extremely submersive. I want to create something that will never have an ending. There will always be something new and unique.

The Waking Dream is a culmination of all my studies, religion, philosophy, quantum mechanics, cosmology, astronomy, and literature — and so much more than that. I believe that the Waking Dream is a new direction in literature — for many reasons. The Immortal, One, is the beginning of a new way of thinking. The Weirdness is a new way of interacting with our world. And if you take a moment and watch the news its clear to see that the world is having some serious growing pains.

I believe that life imitates art, and that is because we are inspired beings — we want to experience something new, create something new, explore something new. When you look at the list of movies “Coming Soon”, you’ll notice that there are over 12 remakes in the works. This means we are running out of ideas, or we’ve fallen into a rut of inspiration. It is now time to think outside the box.

The Waking Dream is a whole new genre, but I’ve put it under dark fantasy because it deals with the end of things as we know it. The Waking Dream World will undergo a drastic change that will leave nothing unaffected — and I think that there is something similar coming for our own world, though I do not claim to have the prescience to know what that might be.

With Waking Dream, it is my commitment to my readers to lead them through a transition to a new way of thinking and interacting, and then, I will do it again. There are 9 novels outlined for the entire series, not counting the short stories and biographies of the Immortals. I have created over 100 characters, and I expect each of you who become submersed in the world, to contribute with your own stories.

The Waking Dream is not just about me, its about all of us. I want others to create stories, and I will happily promote them on my site and in collections. The Waking Dream is about exploring the possibilities, and not limiting ourselves by the ties that currently bind us.

I appreciate all of your commitments to my work. Each fan we gain humbles me beyond words.

Enjoy the world, give me feedback, and help me build the Waking Dream so that we all can awaken our weirdness and change the world.
